MAJJHIMA PATIPADA, or the Middle Way, is the way of practice which has been expounded to us tirelessly by the Lord Buddha since he discovered it more than 2,500 years ago under the shade of the Bodhi Tree.

" If you tighten the string too tight it will snap, but if it is too loose it will not play. "

Those were the lines which the ascetic Gotama overheard by the bank of the river Neranjara, as a music teacher on a passing boat was teaching his student the skills of attaining the perfect pitch on his sitar. Hearing that, Gotama realized that the key to attaining Enlightenment was neither self-mortification nor self-indulgence. The way to Enlightenment was the Middle Way, when the string was neither too tight or too loose.
